my weekend

This weekend I did a lot of partying, I have partied this hard since Halloween weekend. On Friday I went to a friend's birthday party which got shut down, so we ended up randomly going to the Barbary Coast (a Gentlemen's Club) LOL.

playing pool at the Barbary Coast
On Saturday I went a party hosted by Gentlemen Republic and I enjoyed myself as usual. The live band was great and the new venue is also really nice.

Hasaan, 1/3 of Gentlemen Republic

Jerald, 1/3 of Gentlemen Republic
On Sunday I attended the 13th Annual Kappa Christmas Jam. This is my 5th year in a row attending this event...I feel super old LOL. It was nice to go out and see many of my Greek friends all dressed up even in the pouring rain LOL.

My beautiful chapter

Even though is raining all weekend, I made it out to 3 different parties...I have to make the best of my break LOL. What did you do this weekend?

unbeWEAVEable

On Friday I had a sew-in weave installed as a winter protective style. Honestly I have having a hard time with my hair since I started my healthy hair journey, so I really just wanted a break. Also, I will be going to NY next week, so I didnt want to worry about bringing a whole lot of products and worry about styling my hair and hoping it comes out ok.

So I wanted big curly hair and thats what I got, Im actually having a hard time getting used to all of this hair LOL. Its about 7oz of 14in curly Indian hair. And to protect my hair underneath I just spray leave in conditioner on the braids and then oil my scalp. I also plan to wash and DC weekly.

To prepare my hair for the weave, I washed with Giovanni 50:50 shampoo, then I applied Aphogee 2 Minute Keratin Reconstructor. Next I DC'd with Jessicurl Weekly Deep Treatment. After rinsing that out, I applied Giovanni Direct Leave In and detangled in 4 sections using my Ouidad for the 1st time. I applied EVCO to each section and put each section in a braid. I let my hair air dry.

Describe your hair (hair type, thickness, length, porosity, etc)

Describe your journey (did you transition, big chop, etc)

What are your hair goals?

What is your staple style (please include picture)?

What is your hair regimen?

3 month

Wow, it has already been 3 months since I started my healthy hair journey. During these 3 months I have tried twists (outs), flat twist (outs), bantu knots, curlformers and flexirods. Currently my hair is still straight from when I straightened it for my graduation pictures and on Friday I will be putting my hair in a weave as a protective style for the winter. As for the length of my hair, it is pretty much the same since I got it trimmed when I got it straightened and last week I also did a 'search & destroy'. I plan on cutting off my damaged hair as new hair grows in. So my goal is to have a full head of healthy and natural hair by May 2012. So until then the length of my hair shall remain the same since I will trim it at the rate it grows.

1 month into my hhj (10/15/10), old twist out right before I washed my hair

10/16/10 curlformer set

10/21/10 damp hair

10/29/10 flat twist out

11/6/10 soaking wet hair, no product

11/11/10 hair before trim

11/11/10 just trimmed, IDK what I was looking at LOL

Search and Destroy

So last night I trimmed my hair using the "Search & Destroy" method. It only took like 30 min since I just got a trim last month. Although I got a trim, I still saw a lot of split ends and single strand knots, so I decided to take the problem into my own hands.

On Cyber Monday I ordered some shears from Sally's. With my beauty club discount and the Cyber Monday discount, they were only like $7, so I saved like $3 LOL. I purchased the Salon Elements Home Hair Cutting Kit By: Fromm.

Basically i just took a section of hair, combed it out using the comb in the kit, then clipped any damaged ends I saw. After I finished a section, I pinned it up using the clips included in the package.

I only really had damage on the front, right section of my hair, the rest looked fine. But while clipping my ends, I started to get the urge to cut my hair. I tweeted about it and everyone was like  DONT DO IT! lol. Well I plan to keep with my transition, even though the big chop is tempting at times.

Senses - Issue 2

The 2nd issue of Senses is now up, check it out at http://www.gentlemenrepublic.com/

Also, Gentlemen Republic will be hosting another event this month, check out the flyer below.

Music Monday - (3 videos this week, share your response)

This past week 2 very sexual videos were released. The 2 videos I am referring to are Raheem DeVaughn's "She's Single" and Keri Hilson's "The Way You Love Me". Now many people are saying that these are both publicity stunts for the artists, but I mean, what's wrong with that? In the case of Raheem, many are saying that he has real talent and doesn't need to do this. And a lot of people are giving Keri Hilson a hard time for being too sexual in the video. Although I do not like the song or video, I hate the double standard. I didn't hear any complaints about Trey Songz video, but when it's a female its a different story. I personally dislike the song and I honestly think the acting is bad and she is trying to hard, plus she can't dance so she just looks awkward. I actually like Raheem's song, but it also has the same beat as Lil Wayne's "Single" which I also included in this post. So all 3 videos are included....please share your thoughts!

Black Friday Purchases

So I made a few purchases yesterday during Black Friday. A lot of purchases weren't even Black Friday deals, but I was in a shopping mood so whatever.

I have been searching for some flat, black over the knee boots that actually fit my calf and don't look cheap since last fall. When I tried these on I immediately fell in love. Even though they were a little out of my budget, I purchased them anyways :/ But maybe I'll sell my black Coach riding boots to make up for it. So if you interested in purchasing my Coach boots, hit me up!

Lucky Brand Gwen boots in Black
I like the fact that these leggings have a high waist. These aren't something that I would wear often, probably will at the most wear them twice, but I got them half off.
American Apparel Shiny High-Waist Legging in Lamé Smoke
I have been eyeing this dress for awhile now and since I have so many little black dresses, I contemplated on getting it. But I love sexy black dresses, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to add 1 more to the collection. Maybe I'll return the little black dress I bought from Image last week.
American Apparel Sweetheart Two-Toned Mini Dress in Black

So this dress is more appropriate for Spring/Fall but I have been eyeing this dress for awhile as well, so I just got it. I got it in a M/L though, I think I need a small but they didnt have anymore left in small.
American Apparel Poly-Cotton Shirt Dress in French Blue
So I don't know how to do makeup at all!!! But I want to learn, so I though this palatte would be a good starter kit, because I already own brushes, eyeliners, and mascaras.
SEPHORA COLLECTION Color Diary

Many curly heads rave about this comb. They say it cuts detangling time in half and less breakage. I was a little skeptical about purchasing it since it costs $24, but I have been experiencing a lot of breakage, so I wanted to see if this comb could help.
Ouidad Double Detangler Comb
So I already own a ton of jeans, so I told myself I wouldn't buy anymore, but I got such a great deal on these, I couldn't pass them up.
Joe's Jeans Cigarette jeans in Paltrow
I have always had a hard time shopping for peacoats since I am slim with long arms, so either the coat is too bulky or the sleeves are too short. I already own a black peacoat which is why I got this one in charcoal. And I have been wanting a peacoat with a hood, so I was excited when I saw this. Also this peacoat is longer than the one I already own, so it adds some variety. I purchased this online, so I hope it fits well. But I have tried on Miss Sixty peacoats before and the fit is usually flattering.
Miss Sixty Women's Hooded Long Peacoat in Charcoal
Anyone who knows me, knows that I am obsessed with lipgloss/balm/moisturizers. I am lowkey addicted and I start having withdrawals when I am away from my lip gloss too long. So I usually stock up on lipgloss so that I can have some at home, in my car, in my backpack, in my purse, etc so that if I ever lose or forget it, I always have a backup. Well right now I'm running low, and I wanted to try something new since I no longer really like my CO Bigelow lipgloss anymore I heard good things about this balm, so I hope it lives up to the hype!

Rosebud Three Lavish Layers of Lip Balm

So these are the purchases I made for myself, nothing too exciting and I made a few gift purchases for others as well.  What did you buy during Black Friday??????

Music Monday - Long Way Down

Here is a new leaked video from Keyshia Cole. My friend is actually an extra in the video, you can see her in the beginning snapping a pix of Keyshia Cole. Also, Keyshia's weave is similar to the weave I plan on getting in December as a protective style.

Tutorial Tuesday - Straight hair

So since I got my hair straighten a few days ago, I thought I should post a tutorial for straightening natural hair. Instead of posting a video, I am posting a few links to one of my favorite blogs. All the link relate to straightening natural hair and I think they are very informative and useful. I actually wish Nikole would just do my hair for me LOL. Shoot, she is in LA, but I'm sure she has better things to do than my hair. Anyways, I hope you find the links below useful :)

Music Monday - Take Off The Blues

So since the Hearing section of Senses features Foreign Exchange, I thought I should share a song by them for Music Monday. This song isn't off their new album, but I still like the 2 songs featured in this video.

Android Apps worth downloading

So in one of my earlier posts, I mentioned my purchase of the HTC Evo, which is an Android phone. I love this phone, and I also love many apps on it. Below I listed the apps I have downloaded that you might want to download yourself. BTW, all the apps mentioned below are free, I think so of them have better versions that are available for purchase.

Fandango Movies: you can search theaters/showtimes nearby you, buy tickets, look at reviews, watch trailers and more

Foursquare: useful for tips of nearby places and connecting with friends, can also link to Facebook and Twitter

Fring: free video calls! My phone has a front facing camera as well as a back facing camera, the front facing camera allows me to video chat, similar to Skype.

Gas Buddy: Helps you find the lowest gas prices nearby

Lookout Mobile Security: Blocks viruses and spyware, backsup contacts, photos and call history, , locate phone on a map, activate a loud alarm

Pandora: Personalized radio station

PingChat!: Somewhat like BBM, but you can use it across Android, iPhone and BlackBerry networks.

Shazam: Ever hear a song, but don't know the name? With Shazam it will tell you the name and artist of the song playing and give you the option to buy it.

Tango: Allows you to video chat...similar to the Fring app

Twidroyd: Personally my favority Twitter app for an Android phone. I have also tried Twitter for Android, Peep, and Tweetcaster, but I like Twidroyd the best.

Vlingo: Very useful app, especially when driving. It will read your texts aloud and also allows you to send texts, email, search, use Facebook/Twitter/Foursquare and much more by just talking into the phone.

The Weather Channel: Useful for checking the weather, also can use GPS to give you the weather of you current location.

Yelp: Search for places nearby or afar, look up reviews, etc!

Gentlemen Republic: Senses

In my a couple of my previous entries, you may recall me mentioning attending events hosted by Gentlemen Republic. Other than the nightlife aspect of Gentlemen Republic, they also work in the community and have recently started a web magazine which was released today. The magazine is called Senses, and is somewhat of a GQ magazine for black men. The reason the magazine is called Senses is because it caters to all 5 senses; Sight, Hearing, Smell, Taste and Touch. Coincidentally I write for the Taste section, so in this magazine you can get another Taste of Chocolate LOL. Although the magazine is marketed toward men, there are also interesting and useful information for women as well. So I would greatly appreciate it if you took the time to visit the website and check out the magazine. The website is: http://www.gentlemenrepublic.com/ Once you are on the website click Lifestyle on the left column, then click Senses at the top right, then click the cover (the pic shown at the top of this entry) to view the magazine. Comment on this entry to let me know what you think!

Music Monday - Four Women

I really love this song and I recently heard it again during the credits of For Colored Girls, so I had to play it for Music Monday.

Also, there was a performance of this song on BET's Black Girls Rock! And it features my soror, Kelly Price! EE-YIP!

Both vids have some beautiful hair as well! What do you think of song and the BET version?

Happy Birthday to one of my bestest friends

"Your friend is the man who knows all about you, and still likes you."

- Elbert Hubbard

So today is my best friend, Myeisha's  22nd bday, so I thought I should dedicate a special blog post just for her!
Myeisha and I on my 22nd bday

I met Myeisha back in the 10th grade when I transferred to Long Beach Jordan High School. I think we had English and Government class together. I honestly don't really remember how we became close and hanging out on a regular, but I guess that doesn't really matter. I think we had a couple classes together junior year, but I don't think we had any classes together by our senior year. I just remember us ditching school all the time senior year, we had severe cases of Senioritis!

oldest pic I can find of us (10th grade)

celebrating her 16th bday (11th grade)

High School Graduation (we made it, even after all that ditching!)
Anyways, other than a couple other people, Myeisha is one of the only people I still keep in contact with from high school and the only one I talk to regularly. Although we are opposite in many ways, it somehow works for us. She is always there when I really need her, and I am always talking her to death about all my life problems, because she is one of the few people I trust and am comfortable in confiding in.

I am happy to see her here another year and I am blessed to have her in my life. Love ya girl!

Myeisha's 21st bday

Tutorial Tuesday - Bantu Knot Out on Wet Hair

So if you read my Halloween post you will see that I did a bantu knot out on my hair. I didn't do a tutorial for this style but I searched youtube for a natu knot out on wet hair for those who might be interested. I did mine a little differently, but this tutorial should still help anyone who might try to recreate the look I had

Decision

So I know it hasn't even been 24 hours, but I already made my hair appointment to get my hair straightened (via flat iron). Although I wasn't planning on doing it this early, I guess it will be good to see if my hair has improved or got worse from my curly state. I can also do a length check, which I have never done before. So my appointment is for Nov 11...so I will have pix once I get it done :)

grad pic hair

So I just received an email stating that I need to schedule my graduation picture for next week. So I guess your wondering, whats the big deal? Well I told myself that I wouldn't straighten my hair until I take graduation pix and for graduation. I didn't think my pic appointment would come up so soon, and I am a lil hesitant to get my hair done, although it would be a nice break from having to style my own hair. I have only been curly for a little over a month, so I didn't want to straighten so soon. Well I guess I need to call my hair dresser ASAP, and figure out something to take care of my natural hair before/while straight.

What do you think?

Music Monday - Gone Till November

November is here! Which is quite scary for me, because that means I'm more then halfway through the quarter!

Anyways, I thought I'd share this veideo for Music Monday. Pretty sad song....can anyone relate to this song? If so, share your experiences.

Halloween

So I stayed in for Halloween, because I did enough partying this weekend and I needed to prepare for the week ahead of me. Below I will give a recap of my Halloween hair and costumes.

So last week my best friend had a costume party...I was too cheap to buy a costume, so I just put together something with stuff I already had. I was the legendary Michael Jackson. As for my hair, it was a bantu knot out that I pinned up into a mohawk using bobby pins. My hair was a little too greasy (1st time using coconut oil, went a little overboard), but I guess it worked out for the 80's jheri curl/SoulGlo look LOL.  Oh, and I tried red lipstick for the 1st time!!!!! I used burgandy lipliner, Viva Glam I lipstick and Oversexed plushglass all from MAC.

I think my hair looks more like the girl from the Thriller video, while my outfit looks like MJ from the Bad video. I dont think he was wearing a glove yet in that video, but I had to wear the glove to make sure people knew who I was LOL.

On the Friday before Halloween I went to a yacht costume party. I wore my hair in a simple twistout

The next day I went to a Masquerade Party at this penthouse in Downtown LA. I still haven't perfected 2nd day hair, so I lazily slapped my hair into a bun and went on about my way. Also, I didnt wear my mask the whole night, just had it in my hand, I should have at least took pix in it...smh! Oh and I had a great time at the party, even though we got there super late and the elevator broke from all the people going up to the penthouse, so guess what...we walked all the way up the stairs to the penthouse. By time we go there, I had to step out on the balcony for fresh air, LOL! But I wasn't suprised hat I had a good time, because I always enjoy events by these young men who call themselves the Gentlemen Republic...check out their website for future events gentlemenrepublic.com

As you can see from the pix, my look had less effort at each event, by the time it got to Halloween I didnt even get dressed or do my hair, I was worn out!

Monday, October 25, 2010

Music Monday - Thriller

So my best friend had a costume party this weekend and I dressed as the legendary Michael Jackson, so I decided to play my favorite MJ video today...Thriller! Also, I figured this song ties into Halloween which is coming up on Sunday.

Word Wednesdays - Ghetto

Due to the recent attention towards the Ghetto Fab wig...I want to know how people feel about the word ghetto.

Does this word offend you?
Do you think its ok for only black people to use?
How do you define ghetto?
