Tutorial Tuesday - Roller Set and Silk Wrap on Short Natural Hair

Since I think I have been doing more damage to my hair by styling and detangling while wet so often, I am going to try a roller set on my hair. I purchased some rollers from Sally's this weekend, and I will be putting them to use next time I wash my hair. So here is a tutorial from the lovely MahoganyCurls on a roller set

Music Monday - Out of My Head

This weekend I went to a dance class called Hip Hop Hotties at Allure Dance studio. We learned a routine to the song below. The class was fun but tiring and my body is still sore.

straight hair, dont care

I am currently typing this from my hotel in Denver, CO while I'm away for my sorority's regional conference. So I had been super busy this past week and I was stressing about how I would do my hair, so that it could last the entire weekend without me having to pack a whole bunch of products or spending lots of time restyling my hair. So I decided to go to my hairstylist to get a style similar to whats pictured below
I have never worn my hair like this before, but I thought it was a cute protective style that would look professional and last me for the weekend. Well, there were some changes in my schedule and I was no longer able to make it to my hair appointment. So to accommodate me, my stylist offered to squeeze me in when I had time and said she would straighten my hair, since it takes much less time. At first I was against it, since I didn't want to put heat on my hair, I figured I could just wear my hair in a bun. But then I figured that I need a trim,  so I should just go for it.

To prepare my hair to be straightened I washed with Mixed Chicks shampoo (the only shampoo I have with Sulfates) to clarify my hair. Then I applied Aphogee 2 min Protein treatment to strengthened my hair. Then I DC'd with Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner to restore the moisture in my hair. After rinsing with cool water, I squeezed the excess water out using a cotton t-shirt. Then I put my hair in about 16 twists so that my hair could air dry. Next I unraveled each twist 1 by 1 and sprayed in with Jane Carter Revitalizing leave in conditioner and blew it out using my blow dryer on the cool setting and my Denman brush. My hair was still slightly damp when I was done so I just let it continue to air dry.

Before applying heat I applied Silk Elements Heat Protectant spray, Chi Keratin mist and something else I cant remember. Once my hair was straight, Mixed Chicks Hair Silk was applied to my hair to tame the fly aways. I didn't take any pix right after my hair was done, but I included some pix of me at the conference below.

Recieved Mixed Chicks products today.

Today I received 2 packages! Recently I won 2 different giveaways, one from Meet My Hair and the other from Hair Liberty. Both giveaways were for products from Mixed Chicks. From Meet my Hair I won the
no frizz trio  from Mixed Chicks. The trio includes:

  • MIXED CHICKS 10oz shampoo
  • MIXED CHICKS 8oz deep conditioner
  • MIXED CHICKS 10oz leave-in conditioner.

A couple days later I found out that I also won the Hair Liberty Giveaway, which meant I got to choose a product from under $20. I chose the Hair Silk, since I received all the other products on the No Frizz Trio.

Coincidentally I received both packages today. I sent my shipping info to Hair Liberty 5 days ago, and the product was shipped directly form Mixed Chicks, so I received the product quickly. They also included a chapstick and leave in conditioner sample in the package :)
I sent my shipping info to Meet my Hair 12 days ago, and they shipped the product to me, it took a little longer, but they sent me the tracking info so that I could at least know when to expect it.

I know there is a lot of dislike for Mixed Chicks due to the Twitter incident and now they are in the news again for suing Sally's. But I would like to still give their products a try because I have heard good things about the products even though the ingredients aren't that appealing.
So once again, I want to say thank you to Meet my Hair and Hair Liberty. Also, stay tuned for a review...

Once my bantu knot out got old, I decided to do a Curlformer set, I havent used my Curlformers since October so I excited to use them again. I washed my hair using Giovanni 50:50 shampoo, conditioned with Giovanni Tea Tree conditioner. I detangled my hair in the shower with my fingers. After washing my hair, I got hungry LOL, so I stopped doing my hair to eat, so my hair pretty much air dried.

this is what my hair looks like air dried with no product

I usually put my curlformers on wet hair, but since I knew my hair wouldnt have much time to dry, I figured that it might be better to do on slightly damp hair. So I moisturized each section using Giovanni Direct Leave in, sealed with EVCO and appled Aloe Vera gel for hold before putting in the Curlformers. I think I made my sections too small in the back because once I got to the top I had ran out of Curlformers, so I used a flexi rod instead. I plan on purchasing more Curlformers before trying to do the set on my hair again. The next morning I took out the Curlformers.
since I was running out of Curlformers I did bigger sections in the front, which didnt allow me to get my roots good

flexi rod where I ran out

As I took each one out, I checked my hair for split ends and I only found like 3-4 strands that were split. Which is pretty good considering that I havent had a trim since December. So I trimmed the ends that were split and moisturized the curls with Elasta QP Mango Butter. Then I seperated some of the curls and massaged away the parts and I was good to go.

My hair got frizzy that night, so before I went to sleep I put some of the curlformers back in. The next day I wore the curls pinned back, and now I have my hair in a bun.

Tutorial Tuesday: expired bantu knot out

Here is a tutorial from LongHairDontCareLLC that shows a quick and easy style to do on an old bantu knot out

I should have tried to save my bantu knot out like this, but instead I just cowashed my hair and did a curlformer set, I will write a post on that experience later

Zipporah Beauty

Yesterday I got a package from Zipporah Beauty!
I recently won a giveaway from Zipporah Beauty on Youtube. I won the 8oz Zipporah Beauty Delight My Hair Deep Conditioner. And I was suprised to see that a comb was included with my prize as well. Which was really great because I was recently thinking how I need to buy a rattail comb, and now I don't  have to. So this post is just say THANK YOU! I will try this product soon, so as usual stay tuned for a review. In the meantime, check out the other product from Zipporah here.

bantu knot out

Wednesday night I cowashed my hair with Herbal Essence Totally Twisted and detangled in the shower with my wide tooth shower comb. I dried my hair with a cotton T-shirt. Next I got my blow dryer and put it on the low and cool setting and blew out my hair using my Denman brush. Since I am still growing out heat damage, I still do not use direct heat on my hair. There was no heat coming out of the blow dryer, just cool air, kind of like putting my hair in front of a fan. This allowed me to stretch my hair out but my hair was still damp, I only did it for like 5-10 mins. And I also sprayed my hair with heat protectant...just in case!

So after that I put my hair in 16 bantu knots. I applied Shea Moisture Hold & Shine Hair Moisture Mist and Curl Enhancing smoothie to each section before putting it into a bantu knot. I put each Bantu knot in a 1 strand twist then secured it with an ouchless rubber band. Some sections were kind of big, so I flat twisted the hair at the root first.

Once I was done I went to sleep with a satin bonnet. The next morning I unraveled the knots using Jojoba oil. I didn't really separate the hair or anything, I just pretty much wore it as it was.
this is what it looked like right after I took out the knots, I hadn't styled it yet

this how I looked when I left for class

My 1st Youtube video!!!!

I randomly decided to record me taking down my bantu knots yesterday, so here it is! I will do a detailed blog post on my bantu knot out later!

Featured Friday - Naturally Chelsea

Hey my name is Chelsea or Naturally Chelsea in the cyber curly world

Location and what is the natural scene there?:

I live in Toronto Canada and the natural scene is non existent. Everywhere I turn there are girls weaved and wigged up. But there is hope since I saw one woman with really juicy twists once so maybe a few more natural heads will start appearing.

Why did u go natural?

I actually went natural with the intention of texturizing. Two of my friends had recently had their hair done and it seemed like the best of both worlds- curls that hung loosely and hair that was still thick. Besides if I were to be honest I wanted the ‘she must be mixed curls’ (yh I know ignorance at its finest). So I started my transition and struggled to maintain my hair.

Then during the summer I started doing research online to care for my hair properly and I stumbled upon and and fell in love with my natural hair. I learned to appreciate my natural hair whilst I learned to care for it and after a short love affair I decided to never put another chemical on my hair again.

How did others react to you going natural? What was your response to them?

My mother hated it. She actually forbid me from going natural or cutting my hair. It was strange seeing as she had recently done the BC. She told me that I would not be pretty without my straight tresses. However, I had very supportive friends and one in particular who kept me motivated.

My other family members were more in disbelief than anything else. After I BC’d there were many conversations about my decision and many a time I heard “Do you know she cut it off, she’s natural?” on the phone but it was not negative per se, just curiosity, perplexity and disbelief.

My response was to keep it moving. I am a strong person on the whole and when you tell me no it only makes me want to do it even more to prove you wrong. Every negative comment pushed me further on my journey and now the naysayers are my biggest cheerleaders.

In regards to your hair, how do you describe yourself (natural, curly, kinky, coiled, nappy, healthy, etc) and why?

I am definitely natural. As far as curls go I have 3c waves and 4a corkscrews. But most importantly my hair is healthy and beautiful.

Describe your hair (hair type, thickness, length, porosity, etc)

My hair is medium to fine thickness, with medium porosity. I am above shoulder length.

Describe your journey (did you transition, big chop, etc)

I transitioned for 11 long months. Then on the 7th of November I cut off the relaxed ends at the back of my head out of curiosity. The following day I simply could not hold back any longer. I was far too anxious to see my natural hair and begin experimenting so I cut it all off on the 8th of November.

What are your hair goals?

I would love BSL hair that is partially stretched from a braid or twist out. The reason for my length is really to prove a point. I want to show people that women with highly textured hair can grow their hair to unimaginable lengths. Also I believe the length will inspire more women to take the plunge for naturally beautiful hair. But most importantly I want hair that is healthy art any length.

What is your staple style (please include picture)?

A braid (pictures 4-6) or twist out (pictures 1-3) are my favorites

Also since it is winter I do twist (pictures 7-11) my hair to protect it from the elements

What is your hair regimen?

Well now that it is winter I:

Cleanse my hair on Thursday or Friday using a shampoo bar and Herbal Essences Hello Hydration conditioner.

I then set my hair for a twist out for church on Saturday using Qhemet’s Cocoa Tree Detangling Ghee, texture my way moisturizer and a various butter to seal.

I then stretch my hair using plaits so that I can twist my hair later using aloe vera gel. This is my protective style for winter

If I do not twist my hair then I will dry braid my hair dampening my hair slightly and using aloe vera gel as my style and wear my hair like that for the entire week.

What are your staple/holy grail products?

I love Herbal Essences Hello Hydration shampoo and conditioner (conditioner especially)

Shea butter

Aloe vera gel

Qhemet Biologics Cocoa Tree Detangling Ghee

Darcy’s Botanicals Madagascar Vanilla Styling Crème

What is your definition of natural?

The hair that literally comes out of your scalp minus any chemical that will alter its pattern (i.e curly to straight or straight to curly).

If one colors their hair I still consider them natural.

Best advice to someone who is thinking about going natural?

Be patient!! Nothing worth having comes easily. If you care for your hair and show it some TLC it will grow.

Do not compare your hair to that which is on someone else’s head. You hair is beautiful for the mere fact that it is unique so cherish the tresses you have because there may be someone out there who envies your hair.

Going natural whilst young can sometimes be a daunting thought. You may worry about your parents and family members, school and everything else under the sun. But all is not lost. I mean think about it, IT IS YOUR HAIR!! You should have some say in what happens to it. The rude comments of others will come to pass and at the end of it you will have a head full of healthy hair and all the haters will be asking you how to grow their edges back and what your ‘secret’ it.

Laser Hair Removal Update

Today I had my 2nd laser hair removal treatment, I talked about my 1st treatment in another post. During the weeks in between my treatments, my hair grew back but it shedded. Its so weird to see the hair there ands then it just slowly goes away. Then my hair started growing again, but it seemed to be less hair than usual. Before my appointment I shaved the hair that came back. Today my bikini area was not as painful as the last time, actually it wasn't painful at all. Also in between the treatment, I didn't experience any peeling, scabbing or dryness, so I hope my skin does well this time too. Sp far I am pleased with the treatments, and I hope that it provides lasting results!

Shea Moisture Haul

So even though I promised myself that I wouldn't buy any more products, I couldn't pass up this BOGO deal. So the Product Junkie in me ended up purchasing 4 Shea Moisture products.  The products I purchased are:

  • Hold & Shine Hair Moisture Mist Coconut & Hibiscus

  • Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Hair Masque

  • Curl Enhancing Smoothie Coconut & Hibiscus

  • Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo

So I ended up purchasing 2 products from their Coconut & Hibiscus line and 2 products from their Raw Shea Butter line. Last month I purchased a product from their African Black Soap line, so the only line I haven't purchased is the Yucca & Baobab products. I actually really wanted to try this line since I really want some volume to my hair, but I have been trying to stay away from products with protein.

While in Walgreen's I also purchased the Scunci Effortless Beauty Medium Upzing Double Combs. I have been wanting to try this, so I hope it comes in handy!

So did you get any products from Walgreen's this week?

Feature Friday - Jasmine

Name: Jasmine Elliott

Location and what is the natural scene there? Nashville, TN. The natural scene is coming along. Not many naturals here, but more and more women/ children are choosing the natural route because of the harmful effect of the water and air here.

Why did u go natural? I went natural because I have always loved the big natural look. Even while having a relaxer, I would relax and then sew-in a BIG curly fro.

How did others react to you going natural? What was your response to them? My sister (who is natural with a BC as of February 2011) thought it was so cute! My mom on the other hand (who is also now natural for a little over a year) told me I needed to relax my hair quick. My response? I definitely wasn't turning back! i couldn't stop looking at my little curls!

In regards to your hair, how do you describe yourself (natural, curly, kinky, coiled, nappy, healthy, etc) and why? I decribe myself as "napptural". I even started my own hair styling business called Nappturals by Jas.
Describe your hair (hair type, thickness, length, porosity, etc) I have realllly thick 3c/4a/4b/4c (whew!) hair. Its about 6" now. It soaks up any and all moisture it can get!

Describe your journey (did you transition, big chop, etc) At one point I was relaxing and expirimenting with color so much that I started waking up with my hair on my pillow. The shedding got rediculous. So I went without a relaxer for a couple months and BCed in January of 2009. I wasn't comfortable with the style being so short so I cut down to 1 inch so I could still wear braids and things. When it grew out to about 5 and a half inches i wanted to color it again. Unfortunately I did it wrong so I had to do another BC in december of 2009. But it was ok. I was ready for it.

What are your hair goals? My goals are to get my hair to mid-back  bra strap legnth by June of 2012

What is your staple style (please include picture)? My FAVE style is just the simple headband/afro. Its quick and cute and is perfect for every occasion.

What is your hair regimen? In the winter I try to moisturize as much as possible. I can't do many wash and goes. In the spring/summer/fall I wash n go almost everyday.

What are your staple/holy grail products? Making your own products is best. You can control how much oil your hair gets.

What is your definition of natural? Natural to me means being curly-kinky-coily in the most organic way :)

Best advice to someone who is thinking about going natural? Just do it. I promise you won't be leaving much behind.

Where can we find you on the web (blog, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Fotki, etc)? Facebook (add me by searching and YouTube search NapturalJas
